Flight Tracking - Frequently Asked Questions

Travis

What is 'TraVis' Flight Tracking?

"TraVis" is our online 'Track Visualisation' tool for reviewing information about London Luton Airport flights.  Flights are shown against various styled map backgrounds and you can click on the individual aircraft icons to see details about that flight.  Flights leaving London Luton Airport are shown with green icons and flights arriving at the airport are shown with red icons.

What detail can I see?

You can view information about flights leaving from or arriving at London Luton Airport.  You can see the aircraft type, altitude, speed, destination or originating airport, weather data at London Luton Airport and noise measurements at the Airport’s fixed noise monitors.

How is the aircraft’s speed represented?

The speed of each aircraft is shown within this tool as airspeed in knots (KN) and equivalent groundspeed in kilometres per hour (km/h).

Is the information ‘live’, eg: in real time?

No it isn’t.  There is a three hour time delay.  This is because London Luton Airport has to ensure that all details are correlated and matched.  Although there are internet sites available that provide “live” flight tracking, the TraVis flight tracking tool is much more detailed and entirely specific to London Luton Airport.  Other airport flight tracking tools also have a time delay; some up to 24 hours.

Are other flights shown?

No, you can only see London Luton Airport arrivals and departures.  The flight tracking tool does not show the ‘bigger’ picture overall within the airspace around London Luton Airport or flights to or from other airports in the region.

Can I use 'TraVis' flight tracking to monitor and analyse flights?

No.  The 'TraVis' flight tracking tool is provided for information purposes only.  London Luton Airport’s Environment team proactively monitors every London Luton Airport flight each day using a dedicated noise and track monitoring system.  You will notice the aircraft icons are not to scale and the ‘tail’ behind them is representational, not an actual track of that flight.

What does the noise data tell me?

London Luton Airport monitors every departing flight to ensure aircraft comply with very stringent noise controls.  This is achieved using three noise monitors placed 6.5 km from the Airport.

Our noise monitors are shown within the flight tracking map as coloured circles.  Noise is monitored in decibels and these levels are shown on the monitors.  You will notice that decibel levels are shown even when there is no aircraft over the monitor and this is because the monitor is picking up ambient noise levels, for example general noise such as birds, traffic or other background activity.  Please see our Aircraft & Ground noise information for further details of how we monitor noise and track keeping in full.

How can I make an enquiry or complaint about a London Luton Airport flight?

London Luton Airport has a dedicated team that manages noise.  You can contact the team by email, noise@ltn.aero or by visiting “About Us” and then select “Noise” from the left hand navigation menu. We log and investigate, where appropriate, all enquiries or complaints and respond if requested.
