Airport cyclists raise £32,000 for Sue Ryder in Luton to Paris charity challenge
Published: 23 September 2013
A group of Airport employees was celebrating this weekend having completed a gruelling 315 mile cycle challenge from the Control Tower at London Luton to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, raising over £32,000 for Airport charity partner Sue Ryder, beating their target of £30,000.
Hailed as an overall success, the event wasn’t without its ups and downs. The cyclists battled heavy rain and one of the riders managed to get a record five punctures. But the team remained in good spirits throughout the trip, averaging around 80 miles in the saddle each day.
Sian Pearce, cyclist and Airport Community Relations Executive said: ‘This was a great challenge and a wonderful team event. We finished the ride on Saturday afternoon after four days of riding and enjoying the beautiful French countryside. I’m still a bit stiff and I’m walking slightly funny but it’s all in a good cause.’
Maria Black, ADP UK Managing Director, commented: “We are delighted to have supported our client, London Luton Airport, as the Platinum sponsor of the Luton to Paris Cycle Challenge raising vital funds for Sue Ryder. Despite the weather making cycling conditions a little difficult, we are pleased the team were able to beat their fundraising target and arrive safely at the Eiffel Tower on Saturday and in such good spirits. Many congratulations.”
Neil Thompson, cyclist and Airport Operations Director said; ‘We have been overwhelmed by support for the challenge to date. In particular, Airport companies have been really generous and we would like to thank our sponsors, with a special mention of thanks to our Platinum sponsor ADP UK.’
Paresh Nar, Regional Fundraiser for Sue Ryder said “We’re really proud of the team for reaching the Eiffel Tower and raising such a fantastic amount. Funds raised by this challenge will support Sue Ryder’s work in the local area including St John’s Hospice in Bedford and Stagenhoe Neurological Unit in Hertfordshire’
