London Luton Airport making sure it’s on track for the London 2012 Olympics

London Luton Airport has today announced plans to carry out essential improvements on the approach road to the Airport and Central Terminal Area to ease traffic delays and prepare the Airport for the arrival of spectators during the London 2012 Olympics.
The plan is to construct two new traffic lanes to the south of “Airport Way”, through the existing underpass, leading directly into a newly created set down system in the Central Terminal Area. Details and images of the plan have been submitted to Luton Borough Council for approval. Improving the experience for passengers, as well as benefiting local businesses and residents, the planned infrastructure enhancements will relieve traffic congestion en route to the Airport along the East Luton corridor via the A1081.
Glyn Jones, Managing Director of London Luton, said, “We are now the 5th largest Airport in the UK, attracting nearly 10 million passengers a year. The plans we have put forward to improve the Airport’s road infrastructure will help manage the growth we have generated in recent years at one of the regional economy’s most important assets. This is an important part of improving the travel experience of all our passengers, including the many visitors to the Olympic Games who we are expecting to pass through the airport next year.”
London Luton Airport was recently announced by the Mayor of London as one of 35 locations to host Olympic London Ambassadors. The Airport’s close proximity to London makes it one of the fastest and most convenient gateways to the Games, and this proposal is an important part of preparing the Airport’s infrastructure for the Olympics.

Ahead of the Games, the Airport is preparing itself for the arrival of VIPs, dignitaries, and many of the Games’ sponsors, using private jet operators. Signature Flight Support, Harrods Aviation and Ocean Sky are predicted to handle many more additional flights to the Airport.
