The Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP, Secretary of State for Transport, today officially inaugurated London Luton Airport's new £35 million Passenger Terminal Development.

The ceremony, during which he unveiled a commemorative plaque at the entrance to the Development, marked the completion of the principal phases of this major 12 month project which has been one of the largest in the Airport's history.

Speaking at the unveiling, the Secretary of State said: "The White Paper recognised the important role London Luton Airport could play in supporting the region's economy and in helping to ease some of the wider capacity pressures in the South East.  The response from the airport is in evidence today with these impressive new facilities that mark another milestone in the continued development of London Luton."

Speaking earlier Kathryn James Managing Director of London Luton Airport said:  "We are honoured to welcome The Secretary of State to London Luton Airport today, and his visit sets the seal on this £35 million project which is just the latest stage in our long term plan for the development of the Airport and with it the future prosperity of the town of Luton - and indeed the entire region".

"Our planning is now firmly focused on the response we recently made to Government for London Luton Airport to contribute to the long term aviation capacity in London and the South East.

"This will increasingly make the Airport a vital economic engine, attracting jobs and investment into a huge catchment embracing North London, the South Midlands and East Anglia".
