60 mins Free Parking, Free Drop-Off and Free Bus to Terminal

Published: 18 June 2009

Many airports within the UK are currently facing issues with managing access to and from the terminal because of a significant increase in passenger numbers over the last decade and more stringent security requirements.

London Luton Airport (LLA), whose passenger numbers have grown from 7 million in 2002 to over 10 million in 2008, takes this access issue very seriously indeed. As a result, it has conducted an exhaustive review in order to introduce a new access plan to manage traffic flow and encourage the use of public transport. This will help ensure that all passengers, including the elderly and less mobile, are best able to access the terminal in a secure and orderly manner.

The plan will be implemented from July 1st 2009.

Passengers will be able to make use of the following access facilities:

Pick up/Drop off/Parking

  • Mid Term Car Park: Passengers will be able to drop off, pick up or to park for free for up to 60 minutes.  They will then take a free 2 minute bus for the terminal from a sheltered stop which departs every 10 minutes.
  • Short Term Car Park: Passengers will be able to drop off, pick up or park 4 minutes walk from the terminal for £2.50 for up to 15 minutes and £4.50 for up to 30 minutes. Blue Badge holders will be able to use dedicated disabled parking bays for up to 60 minutes free of charge. In addition to the existing pre booked Passengers of Reduced Mobility (PRM) service available from arrival at the airport through to boarding the aircraft, LLA  will provide electric 'buggies' for those passengers needing disability assistance to be introduced by the end of 2009. Additional entry and exit lanes have been added to provide a faster and more convenient service.

Drop off only

  • Priority set down area: Passengers can pay a £1.00 charge for 10 minutes for drop off although the vehicle cannot be left unattended. Wider bays and improved lighting have been introduced to help speed up the unloading of luggage. There will also be investment in traffic light equipment to control traffic flow on the roundabout in front of the terminal building.

Public transport

  • Passengers can make use of a remodelled public transport interchange with coach, bus and rail shuttle services dropping off outside the terminal building and a dedicated bus lane providing fast access to the terminal.

Glyn Jones, Managing Director of London Luton Airport said:

'London Luton Airport remains committed to ensuring all passengers are able to access the terminal in a secure and orderly manner. By encouraging use of our mid term car park, which is only a 2 minute bus ride from the terminal, and the excellent public transport links to and from the airport we will be better able to manage traffic flows around the terminal.'
