‘Welcome to Luton’ winners unveiled at London Luton Airport
Published: 26 July 2011
Six talented pupils from schools across Luton will have their artwork displayed in London Luton Airport’s Gateway Gallery this summer, offering arriving passengers an opportunity to find out what the children of Luton consider the best bits of their town.
The artwork has been produced as a result of a design competition run by Wacom Europe, Active Luton and London Luton Airport. Children were asked to create a picture which celebrated the best parts of Luton whilst welcoming passengers to the Airport. Year 5 and 6 pupils from Luton’s primary schools were invited to take part in the project which was delivered by Active Luton teachers. Wacom provided “Bamboo Pen and Touch” tablets enabling the children to create pictures electronically.
The judging panel of local dignitaries and business people selected the winning entries which are now on display until the end of August in the Gateway Gallery in the Arrivals area at London Luton Airport. The winning school will receive £3,000 worth of creative and interactive technology provided by Wacom.
As part of the awards ceremony the pupils were presented with certificates by World Boxing Champion Billy Schwer, former Luton Town Footballer Kevin Nicholls and Kelvin Hopkins, MP for Luton North.
The winner was:
• Lewis Bland, Year 5, The Meads Primary School
The runners up are:
• Dawud Tabor, Year 6, Farley Junior School
• Eloise McGeady, Year 5, The Meads Primary School
• Klaudia Bieganska, Year 6, Downside Junior School
• Rehanna Sabir, Year 6, Farley Junior School
• Rezwan Miah, Year 6, Farley Junior School
Lewis said: “I really enjoyed the project”.
Toni Chivers, Active Education Manager for Active Luton, said: ‘Active Luton was delighted to work with local schools on this project. The children were so enthralled in the competition and developing their drawing with the Bamboo tablet and were really enthusiastic about their favourite parts of their home town”.
