SCHOOL HOLIDAY GETAWAY AT LONDON LUTON AIRPORT

Published: 28 July 2008

London Luton Airport saw over 145,000 passengers travelling through the Airport over the busy end July getaway; this represents a significant passenger increase of 5% on 2007 and marks the beginning of the peak summer period.

Sun destinations remain hugely popular as families make the most of the recently commenced school holidays and poor UK weather to start their much anticipated summer holidays. City breaks also feature highly and include destinations such as Barcelona, Paris, Prague and Rome with passengers taking advantage of the extensive route network and low fares on offer from London Luton.

To ensure passengers have a smooth journey through check-in and security search, London Luton Airport has a special advisory feature on its website home page for passengers who may be unsure about what they can take on board an aircraft.
Passengers will be advised of the restrictions on liquids in hand baggage and that strictly one piece of hand baggage per passenger is allowed.

Key summer sun destinations this year include the short hop to the Balearic Islands with Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, to Mainland Spain with Alicante and Malaga most prominent as well as further a field to Larnaca and Paphos in Cyprus, Dalaman and Bodrum in Turkey and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

The Airport has further invested in its retail offer to enhance the passenger experience this summer with the arrival of Café Nero, Yam Yam and JD Sports which join such brands as Monsoon and Kurt Geiger, as well as high street eateries including Krispy Kreme, Prêt a Manger and Starbucks.

Notes to Editors:
London Luton Airport is one of the UK's largest airports now carrying over 10 million passengers, an increase of nearly 400 per cent over the last decade.  Employing close to 500 staff, the airport is a major economic driver for the region, as well as a major base for 'low cost' or 'no frills' air travel.

EasyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Monarch, Thomsonfly, SkyEurope, Aer Arann, XL Airways, Flybe and Thomas Cook operate from the airport, departing to over 95 destinations including services to Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The airport is operated and developed by a consortium of which Abertis Infraestructuras, a leading European infrastructure provider, is a 90 per cent majority shareholder and Aena Internacional, the international business arm of Aena- the Spanish national airport and air traffic control organisation, is a 10 per cent shareholder.

In January 2008 London Luton Airport launched its Community Engagement Strategy, which set out the Airport's formal commitments to the community up to 2012.  The strategy focuses on three action areas, 'A Better Environment', 'A Vibrant Neighbourhood' and 'A Growing Economy', identifying priority programmes in each one.

As well as outlining the Airport's priorities for the next five years, the document also summarises its commitments for 2008, which include the publishing of a revised environmental policy, practical support for at least 20 local community projects and the development of a schools outreach programme.
