Busiest Ever Month At London Luton Airport

Published: 16 September 2008

Record passenger performance saw London Luton Airport handle 1,095,956 passengers during August, the busiest month in the Airport’s history. This represented an increase of 2.6% on the previous year equating to over 27,000 additional passengers.

Bucking the trend for the major London Airports, these positive growth figures are expected to continue with nine new services still to launch in 2008, including further inroads into France, Italy, Poland, Romania and Lithuania from Ryanair and Wizz Air alongside new services to the Benelux region with London Luton's newest airline transavia.com who have today announced a new twice daily Rotterdam jet service commencing 27 October 2008.

Natalie Raper, Marketing Director of London Luton Airport, said, "Achieving record passenger traffic in the current economic climate is a fantastic performance. We are committed to continual development in order to meet the needs of our passengers and airline partners and these results demonstrate that we are achieving this.

With our network of nearly 100 unique destinations, offering high frequency and far reaching destinations we continue to serve the requirements of both the business and leisure traveller".

Notes to Editors:
London Luton Airport is one of the UK's largest airports now carrying over 10 million passengers, an increase of nearly 400 per cent over the last decade.  Employing close to 500 staff, the airport is a major economic driver for the region, as well as a major base for 'low cost' or 'no frills' air travel.

EasyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Monarch, Thomsonfly, SkyEurope, Aer Arann, Flybe and Thomas Cook operate from the airport, departing to nearly 100 destinations including services to Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The airport is operated and developed by a consortium of which Abertis Infraestructuras, a leading European infrastructure provider, is a 90 per cent majority shareholder and Aena Internacional, the international business arm of Aena- the Spanish national airport and air traffic control organisation, is a 10 per cent shareholder.

In January 2008 London Luton Airport launched its Community Engagement Strategy, which set out the Airport's formal commitments to the community up to 2012.  The strategy focuses on three action areas, 'A Better Environment', 'A Vibrant Neighbourhood' and 'A Growing Economy', identifying priority programmes in each one.

As well as outlining the Airport's priorities for the next five years, the document also summarises its commitments for 2008, which include the publishing of a revised environmental policy, practical support for at least 20 local community projects and the development of a schools outreach programme.
