Your safety is our priority, and Security Scanners have hugely improved our passenger screening.

We don’t screen everyone, but we are bound to screen a certain proportion of people coming through Security. Normally, the selection is made at random.

The scan only takes a matter of seconds, it’s completely safe, and, don’t worry, it doesn’t take an image of your body.

If you want to know more, please read on.

Why do you have Security Scanners?

Put simply, Security Scanners are used to locate objects concealed under clothing, and they are less intrusive than a hand search. A hand search only happens if the scanner identifies areas that need to be checked.

What about my privacy?

The scanners use Automatic Threat Recognition software, which means that the scan doesn’t actually create an image your body. And none of the data is saved.

Is it safe?

Safety studies have found that Security Scanners have no known health effects. They use millimetre wave technology, which emits a very low-power non-ionising form of electromagnetic radiation.

Security Scanners emit far less radiation than exposure limits set by the European Commission. In fact, the amount is many times lower than the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a mobile phone.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have stated that Security Scanners are also safe for people with medical implants.
