  • In Bulgaria tilting your head from side to side means yes while nodding your head up and down means no, which is the opposite from many other places. This can be confusing for visitors so make sure to clarify verbally if unsure.
  • It is important to remember that in Bulgaria it is predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian, so if you decide to visit churches or monasteries its important to be respectful by being quiet, avoiding flash photography and dressing appropriately.
  • Greet people with a smile and a handshake, smiling and eye contact with Bulgarians is the standard way to greet someone in Bulgaria as they appreciate warmth and sincerity.
