Top Tips for Airport Etiquette

Being in an airport can be a stressful environment. There are lots of fellow passengers in every area, as well as airport staff, pilots and ground handlers all doing their jobs. But, following these unspoken rules at London Luton Airport (and any airport worldwide), will help everyone get to their flight calmly and efficiently.

After all, every good holiday starts with feeling relaxed from the moment you check-in.

Be prepared

Try to arrive at the airport a few hours before your departure time. We recommend checking with your airline to determine the best time to arrive. Remember – this means arriving at the terminal!

You may need to accommodate more time if you’re driving to the airport, and using the shuttle services to get to the terminal. Book your LLA parking space now if you’re arriving at the terminal by car.

Make sure you’ve got all the important bits you need to fly! Keep your passport, boarding pass, and all documentation needed in an easy-to-reach spot in your bag. And if you’re checking any hold luggage in, keep to prescribed weight limits as advised by your airline. Don’t pack any prohibited security items either!

Be ready for security

Nobody wants to spend a long time in Security. Thinking ahead here is key, so if you prepare everything in advance, be aware of any hand baggage restrictions and follow Security staff instructions.

As you’re approaching the front of your lane, take off any coats and bags and put all items into a separate tray (you may need two if you’re travelling heavy!) Patience is good practice here, so don’t worry if you have to wait a few minutes. Once you’re through, it’s time to visit Duty-Free.

Want to get ahead? Use our Fast Track Security service to get to the front, or pick a Prebook Security slot to guarantee when you’ll go through. Ideal for building out a travel itinerary.

Find your spot in the terminal

Airport terminals are a big place, so you’ll want to find somewhere to sit. Make sure that you relax whilst you wait for your flight, book yourself into one of our relaxing lounges, or grab a bite to eat and drink in one of the many cafes and restaurants. Sit close to a departure board to check your gate information as soon as it’s announced!

Keep your personal space

Your boarding gate’s called and you’re heading to the plane. Now the British love a queue, but try not to start queuing or rushing to the plane until airline staff advise you to do so. The flight won’t leave without you! Have your boarding pass and passport at the ready so you’re not fumbling around in your bag and you can get straight to the plane.

Be respectful of other passengers

Once you’ve found your seat, don’t sprawl your belongings everywhere. Tuck any carry-on bags either under your seat or in the overhead bin, and leave room for other people’s things. Depending on your flight, you may be able to enjoy the inflight entertainment. Whether you’re watching the TV on the back of a headrest, or you’re podcast-listening on your phone, keep quiet by plugging in a pair of headphones. Make sure that you ask for any help from your flight attendants, they’re there for your safety and to help you!

Slow and steady wins the race

When the plane’s finished taxiing and you’re at the gate, you may be in a rush to get off and get exploring. But try not to usher everyone in a hurry. Keep your cool and wait for the plane to come to a complete stop. Be considerate to other passengers and remember to collect all your things before exiting safely and making your way to Passport Control.

Don’t crowd the baggage carousel

The final step is picking up your luggage. Once you’re waiting for your cases, make sure to stand behind the line and stay away from congested spots around the baggage carousel. All bags will be loaded and go around the full conveyor belt. Missed your luggage? They'll come back around in a couple of minutes. Once you’ve got all your luggage, you’re free to go on your way and explore. So, where will you go next?
