About Salzburg
Home to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, salt mines, and The Sound of Music, the Austrian city of Salzburg effortlessly mixes the old and new. Make sure you visit the charming Alstadt town centre; quaint Baroque buildings and historical townhouses earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997. With picture-perfect cathedrals, church steeples and Fortress Hohensalzburg — the largest fully-preserved castle in central Europe — there’s plenty to take in.
Stroll down Getreidegasse and pick up all the local souvenirs and sweets. Why not try a Mozartkugel? Pistachio, marzipan and nougat balls wrapped in dark chocolate make a tasty treat. And they're historical, as they were created for the 100th anniversary of Mozart’s passing.
Drive 30 minutes south of Salzburg to the Hallein Salt Mine. It's the world's oldest salt mine to open its doors to visitors, steeped in over 2,600 years of history. And if you want to escape the city, follow The Sound of Music trail and climb the Gschwandtanger. Pretend you're Maria von Trapp running on the hills and see Hohenwerfen Castle at the same time.
