What to wear when you go travelling
Need help finding an airport outfit for travelling? You've come to the right place. Whether you want to keep it simple with a one-piece outfit, wear lots of layers, or you're thinking of wearing a pair of shoes for the first time, there's lots to consider.
Here at London Luton Airport, we’ve plenty of retail shops to get those last-minute essentials before you travel. Find smart clothes and shoes at Boss and Kurt Geiger, the latest athleisure looks at JD Sports, and scarves, hats and sunnies at Accessorize and Sunglass Hut.
But if you're starting from scratch, here are our top tips and tricks to fly in comfort with a well-thought-out airport outfit from takeoff to touchdown. Don’t forget the best accessory – travelling through London Luton Airport, of course!
Wear comfortable clothes
An obvious one, but an important one. Whether it's a morning, noon or night flight, you’ll want to wear an outfit that supports you from the moment you arrive at the airport to when you land at your destination. Pick clothes made out of soft materials to stay comfortable throughout your journey.
Do wear something stretchy
Want to stretch your legs in the terminal or on the plane? It’s ideal to go for slip-on, elasticated clothes that'll stretch over your body. Opt for looser leggings, yoga pants or jogging bottoms for a flight outfit. Leave the jeans in your bag!
Layers are for winners
You might be flying to a warmer destination, but wherever you're travelling to, you'll want to pack an extra layer in your hand luggage. Flying can be a chilly business, especially if you’ve directed the air conditioning onto your seat. Bring a thick hoodie or cardigan for those cooler moments.
Avoid bulky layers
Don't wrap up too warm for your flight, as you may overheat! Get the balance right by wearing a thicker jumper and baggier trousers, instead of large coats that restrict your body movement.
Wear wrinkle-free clothes
Hopping off a plane to meet friends? Look your best from the moment you get off the plane by wearing clothes made from wrinkle-free materials like nylon, polyester and elastane. Avoid linen and silk clothes as they can wrinkle easily.
Wear something you’ve worn before
Sure, we all want to look our best in a new outfit, but what if it doesn't fit right? Go for an outfit that you're sure of for easy, confident travelling. Don't make the mistake of being stuck in a travelling outfit that snags and cuts into your skin.
Avoid intricate clothing
Buttons, beads and belts look good, but what about when it comes to the toilet and you've got to unfasten a complicated outfit? Avoid clothing with lots of added details or a piece of clothing that's too tight or is prone to ripping. You don’t want any accidents! (But if anything does happen when you’re flying from London Luton Airport, last-minute clothes replacements are always available in the terminal…)
Avoid short clothes
If possible, avoid wearing short clothes showing too much skin. You don’t want to stick to a warm plane seat as you fly or wear an outfit that may offend the culture of the country you're visiting.
Wear compression socks to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
If you’re a regular flyer, you may be prone to DVT. DVT is when blood clots occur in the body, typically within the legs. To avoid DVT, put on a pair of compression stockings and flight socks, and keep your feet on the ground at all times to keep blood freely circulating around your body and reduce the risk of swelling. Compression socks are available to buy in Boots.
Wear slip-on shoes
Our Next Generation Security scanners permit passengers to wear any shoes to fly. But, if you’re looking for prime comfort, flat slip-on shoes or trainers are best. If you prefer to slide out of your shoes during a flight, it’s easy to – just put a pair of socks on so you’re not barefoot on the move.
Wear matching outfits
Embrace the fun of travelling with matching or coordinating outfits. They’re a great way to bring larger groups together if you’re all wearing the same thing, making it easier to spot your party as you fly.
What should I wear for a flight?
There are no official rules on what to wear for a flight — you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. But if you're stuck for ideas, we've listed some clothing ideas below that we'd recommend flying in.
- A baggy, loose-fitting top made from breathable materials.
- A long-sleeved sweater. Roll the sleeves up to keep cool or pull them down to stay warm.
- A pair of jogging bottoms with an elasticated waist and ankle cuffs.
- A pair of thin, cotton leggings.
- A pair of worn-in trainers or slip-on shoes.
- A pair of compression socks
- A wrap or a blanket in your bag that you can wear over your body in the terminal or on a flight.
