Tivat, Montenegro

Tivat is a city that’s only just fully coming into its own as a popular travel destination – and that makes it a great place to visit in 2024. It’s located in the middle of the Montenegrin coast, making it great base city if you’re hoping to explore the best beaches the country has to offer. Tivat has plenty of great beaches of its own, including the child-friendly Plavi Horizonti and the secluded Ramala Beach. That said, your first port of call is likely to be the stunning Porto Montenegro, an utterly glamorous complex on the waterfront that’s packed with bars, restaurants, leisure facilities and plenty of family activities.

Other cultural highlights include the Maritime History Museum, the ancient former fishing village of Donja Lastva and the gorgeous Veliki Gradski city park. This exciting city is particularly nice to visit throughout late spring, summer and early autumn. Pick hotels in Porto Montenegro for a particularly luxurious stay.

Nice, France

Nice is one of France’s chicest holiday spots and if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a little sun and fine dining in 2024, we heartily recommend a visit to this jewel of the French Riviera. Sunbathe on the beautiful beaches, sample amazing local seafood and be sure to soak up a few of the cultural highlights. Check out past and modern masters at galleries like the Musée Matisse, Musée Marc Chagall and The Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain de Nice (MAMAC). Or enjoy browsing the many markets, boutiques and luxury stores.

Nice is a city much-loved by tourists, so you’ll find plenty of hotels and holiday-friendly activities on offer. Stay near the Promenade des Anglais, a wonderful boardwalk along the Mediterranean Sea, and be among a lovely selection of bars, clubs and shops at the waterline. As for when to travel, book for flights for March, April, September or October for the optimum combination of good weather with smaller crowds.

Cairo, Egypt

Fly to Egypt’s capital city and find yourself immersed in a bustling and welcoming culture from the moment you land. Sarajevo, Bosnia

There are few cities with a location as stunning as Sarajevo. Nestled in a valley with a scenic mountain setting, it’s a gem of a destination that boasts a brilliant blend of east and west. Soak it all in by booking a cable car trip up the mountain. Or eschew the birds eye view in favour of a walking tour that will let you enjoy the impressive architecture up close. Pay a visit to culturally significant sites like The Yellow Fortress and Vijećnica and tour the Tunnel of Hope to discover some of the city’s rich history for yourself.

Another great place to explore is Baščaršija, the city’s old town, which has all sorts of cute shops and restaurants lining its cobbled streets. Be sure to stop for a Bosnian coffee along the way, the old school café culture shouldn’t be missed. Visit in February or March to avoid the full heat of the summer while still being able to enjoy peak views and weather.

Amman, Jordan

Uncover the magic of Jordan’s capital city, by jetting off to Amman in 2024. Steeped in history, this top city is home to some truly amazing sights, including the Odeon and Roman Theatres and the iconic Citadel, which sits atop the Jebel al-Qala. If you’re planning to sightsee, it’s well worth picking up a Jordan Pass, which covers the entrance fees for many popular attractions. Set aside some time wandering the bustling souks, where you can pick up some real bargains, and do try the falafel.

The city is also the perfect base for exploring some of Jordan’s other highlights. Plan day trips to The Dead Sea, King’s Highway or the Lost City of Petra and enjoy discovering some of the region’s treasures. While the city itself enjoys a relatively temperate climate, the surrounding areas can get very hot in the summer, and the best month for visiting Amman is in November, when you can enjoy sun while avoiding the hottest periods.

Reus, Spain

If you’re keen on the idea of enjoying some sun and Spanish culture but you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter than the biggest tourist spots, Reus is ideal. This Catalonian gem has a reputation for its artistic history and is the perfect place to learn more about Gaudí, who was born and worked there. It also has a great historic quarter and more than its fair share of coffee and wine bars – ideal when you’re on the lookout for a relaxing afternoon after hitting the many shops and boutiques.

Reus is an excellent choice for much of the year and the chances for sun are high anytime from April until November. If you’d love to be there for an annual celebration of Catalan culture, be sure to book a stay to coincide with St Peter’s Day (29th June). This annual celebration has been taking place in Reus since it was founded in the 12th century and boasts a brilliant parade, fireworks and all sorts of local celebrations.

Catania, Italy

Catania is a vibrant Sicilian city that has a fun and modern feel, despite its historic roots and captivating Baroque architecture. Its location is one of the most exciting things about it. On one side are the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea and on the other the impressive expanse of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Not only does this ensure some excellent views, but it makes Catania an excellent holiday for spot for hikers.

There are many beautiful hikes and nature walks to enjoy, whether that’s a trek to the volcanic Mount Etna or the Castello Ursino to Cupola San Nicola loop, which takes in a variety of the city’s most stunning historical sites. Late January or Early February is the ideal time to visit Catania, when the weather is temperate, and the number of other visitors will be relatively low. Look forward to spending time sampling the excellent seafood and relaxing on the sandy beaches, as well as exploring the city’s highlights.

Split, Croatia

Croatia’s second largest city has been a popular spot for a very long time – and it has the ancient attractions and historical sites to prove it! Explore ruins dating back to the Roman Empire and discover an abundance of cultural highlights in this lovely walled city. Located by the Adriatic Sea, Split also boasts plenty of sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing or water sports. It’s also an excellent base for exploring idyllic islands, such as the lively Brač, or the mesmerising Blue Lagoon, found off the island of Krknjaši.

For those who enjoy a busy nightlife, Split has plenty to offer in terms of bars and nightclubs. Holidaymakers who prefer to get in touch with nature will love hiking through the region’s pine forests or taking a stroll up the hill of Marjan. Visit in late spring, early summer or during the autumn months for cooler temperatures combined with lower chances of rain.

Kaunas, Lithuania

Famous for its impressive Interwar architecture and inspiring street art, Kaunas is the perfect city to explore on foot. Amble along tree-lined avenues and cute cobbled streets, discover wide-open squares and be sure to stop off in the many welcoming cafes and restaurants to discover Lithuanian hospitality for yourself. Or spend your days chilling out at Lampėdžiai Lake Beach. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a dip in the water – or to try your hand at kayaking or wakeboarding.

Designated a European City of Culture, Kaunas has a packed cultural calendar and there are lots of exhibitions, shows and festivals to enjoy throughout the year. Visit during January, February or March to avoid peak tourist times and enjoy getting to know Kaunas at your leisure.

Faro, Portugal

Faro is a charming Portuguese city that’s ripe for a visit in 2024, there are lots of things to see and do. Head to the cobbled plaza of the Largo da Sé, located right at the heart of the city’s historic district, and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore some of its most notable landmarks. The city hall, old cathedral and Bishop’s Palace are all close at hand. Also worth discovering is the Faro Bone Chapel, although this historic site is not for the faint of heart!

Head south of Faro and you’ll discover the amazing Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, which is made up of a series of waterways and saltwater lagoons which can be explored by boat or kayak. Also part of the park is the uninhabited Barreta Island, which boasts many lovely beaches and is the perfect place to relax and unwind. The best time to travel to Faro is in April or May, when its most likely to be sunny but not crowded.
