Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Have you ever wondered what the surface of Mars might look like up close?! Lanzarote was formed approximately 15 million years ago and boasts an incredible ‘Mars-like’ landscape thanks to the island’s strong volcanic activity over the centuries. The unique rock formations and dark landscapes are striking and like something from a sci-fi movie. However, rest assured, most of the volcanoes are dormant and the FCDO mark Lanzarote as a safe destination for all visitors.

As well as mesmerising landscapes, a trip to Lanzarote also offers beautiful coastal towns like Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto Del Carmen – each offering a different USP. If you want to explore a little more than the sunbathing opportunities, there are so many exciting things to see and do including: Timanfaya National Park – a volcanic park where you can watch geysers in action, Jameos del Agua – an impressive group of lava tunnels and caves and the Cesar Manrique House Museum – the preserved home of the late artist and sculptor who inspired much of the island’s architecture.

This North African city has all the hustle and bustle you would expect but also the most contrasting peace and calm amongst its trademark riads. They really are a sight to behold with their opulent décor and sometimes boast a swimming pool too.

Other impressive sights in the city include the Koutoubia – a 12th century mosque in the centre of the city, the glamourous and brightly coloured Yves Saint Laurent Garden, the grand House of Photography and of course, the Medina – where bartering is encouraged!

You need not worry about the weather here in Autumn and Winter with average highs in October sitting at 28 degrees, 23 degrees in November and 20 degrees in December. Positively delightful!
