Ground Noise

We know that it’s not just aircraft in the air that can be disturbing; aircraft on the ground can cause disturbance too and we are working to reduce this as much as possible.

For safety reasons, aircraft must undergo regular maintenance checks. Following any engine changes a series of engine ground runs will be carried out. However, we only do this during the day (except for exceptional circumstances) and we restrict this to the noise attenuated engine run-up bay.

We encourage aircraft to taxi to and from the runway with only one engine to reduce the associated noise and emissions.

Auxiliary Power Units (APU's) are small jet engines in the tail of an aircraft that deliver electrical power and air conditioning to the cabin whilst the aircraft is on the ground.

APU’s also create noise from aircraft whilst on the ground and we restrict the amount of time that these can be used and encourage aircraft to plug in a quieter Ground Power Unit (GPU) instead.
