In March 2005, LLA proposed to extend the Luton Controlled Airspace to enable arriving aircraft to track north of the airport during easterly operations. After a 5-month consultation, the change was implemented in 2006.

The change improved efficiency and enhanced the safety of arriving aircraft. It also allowed arriving aircraft to successfully conduct a Continuous Descent Approach, keeping aircraft higher for longer and reducing the noise disturbance on the ground.
